The City of Alturas is excited to announce a great career opportunity for an Administrative Clerk I. The ideal candidate for this job should possess great communication skills both verbally and in writing.  The knowledge of and ability to use Excel spread sheets, Word, and other commonly used computer-based systems. Be able to work well with the general public as well as fellow co-workers. Some of the work that will be performed includes money handling, utility billing, answering the phone and being able to answer questions or direct calls to the appropriate department.  The position will be a full-time benefited position. Under the general supervision of the City Public Works Director, perform a variety of typing assignments and clerical duties requiring a working knowledge of basic department policies and procedures.

Job Duties and Requirements:

  • Handles cash receipting, schedules appointments, utility billings, files documents, issues receipts and distributes incoming mail to various departments. May be requested to prepare and edit a variety of Word and/or Excel documents for departments.
  • Responds to inquiries in person or by phone concerning complaints, utility bills, or other general matters; corresponds with the same as required, in accord with established procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge of English usage, grammar, spelling and punctuation; record keeping methods; filing systems; Word and Excel processing software; practices, procedures, methods and office equipment used in financial and statistical record keeping.
  • Ability to draft routine correspondence, perform record keeping work; operate office computer terminal and standard office calculator.
  • Valid California Driver’s License.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Indoor desk job for 40 hours a week.
  • Job may require travel by car.
  • Physical demands include occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds; walking, some bending, stooping, and squatting.
  • Environment is generally clean with limited exposure to conditions such as dust, fumes, odors or noise.

Education and Experience:

  • Up to one year experience and/or education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities to succeed in the position.
