Overview

The Modoc County Office of Probation is now hiring for the position of Assistant Chief Probation Officer.

Summary of Position:

  • Assists in the planning, organizing, directing and coordinating the activities of the adult or juvenile unit within the Probation Department including youth or adult probation.
  • Investigates cases of juvenile delinquency and adult applicants for probation, supervise, counsel and prepare reports and recommendations for the court, community service, drug and alcohol and electronic monitoring.
  • Coordinates Probation activities with other departments and provides staff assistance to the Chief Probation Officer.

Wage Rate: $4,355 – $5,559 Monthly

Job Duties (not limited to):

  • Supervision received and exercised, may serve in the capacity of the Chief Probation Officer in their absence.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of department policies and procedures.
  • Assists in preparing and administering the department budget.
  • Participates in the selection process and recommendation of the appointment of personnel, coordinate staff training and oversee training fiscal responsibilities to the state, conduct performance evaluations on those officers being supervised, work with employees to correct deficiencies, implement discipline procedures, recommend employee terminations.
  • Supervise and counsel adult and juvenile probations, prepare and carry out case plans as needed.
  • Represent the Probation Department before the court including the presentation of detailed oral arguments and position statements.
  • Review probation work to assure compliance with laws, rules, regulations, professional standards and established policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • State and County laws governing juvenile and adult probation work including Welfare and Institutions, Penal, Health and Safety and Civil Codes.
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
  • Services of public and private agencies available to probationers.
  • Principles and practices of organizational analysis and management.
  • Basic principles of applied psychology and sociology.
  • Modern principles of adult and juvenile probation.
  • Probation case work and interviewing techniques.
  • Counseling techniques.
  • Investigation techniques.
  • Procedures for preservation and presentation of evidence.
  • Court procedures.
  • Arrest, search and seizure procedures.

Ability to:

  • To communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Effectively provide a variety of probation services, including counseling and supervision of difficult cases.
  • Work independently and manage a substantial caseload.
  • Understand and deal effectively with probationers and applicants for probation including those in crisis situations.
  • Analyze investigational material and make proper deductions.
  • Analyze emotional and behavior disorders and carry out treatment plans to include referrals.
  • Exercise skill and judgment in the assessment and treatment of probationers, families and juveniles.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
