Job Description and Duties

Working under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the incumbent operates equipment identified as Category 1 and Category 2 used by assigned unit, and works individually or with a crew performing tasks related to snow removal and  highway maintenance and landscape work.

Operate snow removal equipment including trucks with plows and or sanders, motor graders, loaders, and rotary snow blowers. Included would be operating and manning chain control and road closures, directing traffic and proper placement of warning / detour signs.

Also included would be assisting in all aspects of slide removal (both manual and mechanical).    Assignments will include but not be limited to:  paving, sign/fence/guardrail repair, culvert cleaning, removing litter, roadside rest other duties that would normally be assigned to a Highway Maintenance Worker or Landscape Maintenance Worker.

Duties would include irrigation repair, chemical spraying and Landscape duties.  Equipment Care: Person is responsible for servicing, minor adjustments, emergency repairs.

Special Projects: Work on special projects such as assisting in blasting operations, using rock drills and jackhammers, fabricating tire chains, and setting up emergency traffic controls for accidents and hazardous spills and other duties/incidents as required.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Equipment Operator II Exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g. transfer, permissive reinstatement or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions:                          

Majority of the work is done outdoors, where incumbent is exposed to blown dust, exhaust fumes, noise, uneven surfaces, extremes of heat and cold, inclement weather. May be exposed to loud noises, dust, chemicals, extreme weather conditions, moving vehicular traffic, stressful conditions, poison oak, irritating plants, insects and animals.

Required to work in a wide range of sometimes extreme conditions, including heat up to 120 degrees, cold to –15 degrees, strong winds, rain, sleet, and snow.

During the winter months the workweek is normally 5/8-hour days.  During the summer months the workweeks may be changed to 4/40 -hour days.  The scheduling of the 5/8 days or the 4/40 days is at the discretion of the District Management.  Incumbent may be scheduled to work the night shift as scheduled by the Maintenance Supervisor.

May be required to work overtime due to storms, emergencies, special work projects, or when the Supervisor deems that it is in the best interest of the State to work overtime.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

This position is subject to Post & Bid process.  Applications from a certification list, change-in class, reinstatement, re-employment, and/or training and development assignment will be accepted for this assignment but cannot be acted upon unless the Post & Bid process does not result in hire.
