POSITION: CNDDB Zoology Data Specialist
STATUS: Full-Time / Benefitted / Hourly / Non-Exempt
COMPENSATION: $29.06 – $32.14 per hour
DEPARTMENT: North State Planning and Development Collective
LOCATION: California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) office, Sacramento, CA
RESIDENCY: Candidate must be a California resident. Chico State Enterprises is not a sponsoring agency for staff and management positions (i.e. H-1B Visas).
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Working closely in a group setting with scientists and support staff in the CDFW’s California Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB), the incumbent performs duties involving compilation, analysis, and interpretation of source data used to create complex element occurrence records for rare species, as well as map species locations using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and applications, with a focus on zoology. Data processing will follow standard CNDDB methodology and may require a moderate amount of contact with outside contributors and partners. The incumbent must be a detail-oriented self-learner who can stay on task with minimal supervision. Additional duties may include, but are not limited to:

·       Catalog, route, and file incoming biological survey information on rare native species

·       Use available scientific knowledge to review and evaluate the biological accuracy, precision, and completeness of rare native species survey information

·       Use all appropriate sources (such as published and unpublished literature, museum collections, field survey forms, personal observations, environmental impact and assessment documents, etc.) to provide the most complete distributional picture of each rare species being studied

·       Record and validate habitat status and condition attributes for individual species locations

·       Contact appropriate professional and academic scientific experts to obtain information on the status and location of rare native species; verify and correct contributed biological data as needed

·       Assist in the development and maintenance of methodology and documentation on species mapping and data entry standards and procedures; provide technical guidance regarding changes to new methodology

·       Collaborate with external partners on the acquisition of inaturalist data and integration into state products.


EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:  Bachelor of Science in biology or a related field, including coursework or experience in GIS and wildlife ecology, and at least 6 months of experience in a related field. Four years of relevant experience in biology or a related field may be substituted for a Bachelor of Science. Experience working with biological datasets is highly desirable but not required. Required knowledge, skills, and abilities include:

·       Experience using ESRI ArcMap products or other GIS software

·       Experience in geospatial data development

·       Familiarity with relational databases and database software

·       Background in botany, ecology, zoology, or general biology

·       Familiarity with topographic maps and California geography

·       Familiarity with California fauna

·       Strong organization skills and attention to detail

·       Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

·       Ability to prioritize tasks, adjust to change, and solve problems while communicating issues and asking for clarification

·       Ability to work independently and also function cooperatively and productively as a member of a team

·       Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time; this is an office job with no field work
