There is currently one (1) opening for the position of Deputy Sheriff/Coroner for the Del Norte County Sheriff’s
Department. This recruitment will establish a list of candidates to be used in filling this vacancy as well as an
eligibility list that may be used for future vacancies or temporary help for up to one year. Applications are available

Examples of Essential Duties include but are not limited to:
 Patrol the county roads and waterways to prevent crime and to protect life and property of county
 Respond to radio messages, telephone instructions, and/or citizen requests to appear at scenes of
disorder or crime
 Conduct preliminary investigations of thefts, burglaries, robberies, deaths, assaults, accidents, and
other disturbances
 Arrest law violators and perform physical searches of subject
 Prepare a variety of reports and other record keeping documents such as arrest and investigation
 Testify in court in connection with criminal prosecution
 Participate in public search and rescue duties and performs higher level duties in a training capacity
Deputy Sheriff/Coroner III:
 In addition to the above duties, supervise in a lead person or training capacity and participates in field
patrol operations and activities.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License;
Current First Aid and CPR certificates.
Must be 21 years or older at the time of appointment as a peace officer.
Deputy Sheriff/Coroner I:
High school graduate or equivalent;
Completion of an accredited Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) academy;
Deputy Sheriff/Coroner II: In addition to the above requirements:
One (1) year of experience as a Deputy Sheriff/Coroner I or an equivalent position in another California law enforcement
agency, and
Ability to obtain POST Intermediate certification within time limits specified by departmental policy.
Deputy Sheriff/Coroner III: In addition to the above requirements for Deputy Sheriff/Coroner I:
Three (3) years’ experience as a Deputy Sheriff/Coroner II or equivalent journey-level law enforcement officer in another
California law enforcement agency, and
Ability to obtain POST Advanced certification within the time limits specified by departmental policy.
