Salary Range:

  • DDAI: $5,954 – $9,237 per month
  • DDAII: $6,548 – $10,156 per month
  • DDAIII: $7,344 – $11,393 per month

Job Summary: As a Deputy District Attorney, you will work under the direction of the District Attorney, performing professional legal work consistent with departmental responsibilities. Your main task will be preparing and trying criminal cases in the courts for the District Attorney’s Office.

About the Position: Duties within the Deputy District Attorney roles are assigned based on the difficulty and sensitivity of individual cases. Progression to higher levels is based on years of service, increased scope of knowledge, and expertise.

  • Deputy District Attorney I: Entry-level position with responsibilities ranging from routine to complex cases, with increasing experience and expertise leading to potential advancement.
  • Deputy District Attorney II: Handle more complex cases and tasks with minimal supervision, demonstrating increased ability and skills.
  • Deputy District Attorney III: The most experienced level, capable of handling complex and technical cases independently.

Examples of Duties:

  • Conduct legal activities involving investigation or prosecution of complex criminal cases.
  • Receive and review crime reports, examine evidence, interview witnesses, and determine prosecution feasibility.
  • Appear in court, participate in hearings, trials, and develop case plans.
  • Prepare legal documents, conduct legal research, and draft legal opinions.
  • Coordinate with other departments and law enforcement agencies.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of departmental goals and priorities.

Education, Experience & Licenses:

  • DDAI: Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctorate.
  • DDAII: One year of criminal prosecution and trial experience as a DDAI or equivalent, with knowledge and ability to perform duties.
  • DDAIII: Minimum two years experience as a DDAII or equivalent, with demonstrated knowledge and ability.
  • Must be licensed by the California State Bar Association to practice law in California.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license.

Physical Demands:

  • Regular communication, sitting, and use of hands and fingers.
  • Occasional standing, walking, and lifting objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Work primarily in office or courtroom environments, with moderate noise levels.
  • Contact with sometimes hostile individuals may occur.
