Position Overview: We are seeking a temporary part-time Forestry & Fire Project Manager to facilitate grant project planning and implementation. This position will work hand-in-hand with the public, federal, state, and local agencies to improve forest health and fire resiliency throughout Modoc County for long-term sustainability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct resource inventory and field mapping, including GPS mapping, soil sampling, site evaluation, and vegetation monitoring.
  • Manage contracts between partners, subcontractors, consultants, and stakeholders.
  • Evaluate forestry project sites and oversee grant project planning and implementation progress.
  • Manage project budgets, develop environmental assessments, and prepare outreach and educational materials.
  • Present on current goals of MRCD and associated grant tasks to the board of directors.
  • Assist and report to MRCD Executive Director to achieve overall RCD goals and grant deliverables.
  • Attend training and educational events as appropriate.

Applicant Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and equivalent professional experience focused on forestry, fire ecology, hydrology, ecology, natural resources, wildlife, watershed science, or environmental studies.
  • Valid California driver’s license, clean driving record, and current auto insurance.
  • Strong communication and computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Avenza, ArcGIS).
  • Strong organizational, time management skills, and attention to detail.
  • Comfortable with public speaking, outreach, and education.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and problem solve.
  • Physically able to work in the field during all seasons and often independently.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Modoc County natural resources.
  • Familiarity with forestry, forest health, and wildfire resiliency.
  • Proficiency with mapping services such as ArcGIS and using GPS.
  • Strong outdoor skills and familiarity with CEQA, NEPA, and environmental permitting.
  • Understanding of grant management and local resource agencies.
  • Knowledge of Resource Conservation Districts and NRCS.

Compensation: Starting pay is $32-38 per hour (DOE) with an increase in 12 months based on favorable job performance. Benefits include paid time off (PTO) including sick and holiday upon meeting MRCD’s employment and time requirements. This position offers a flexible schedule with the ability to work remotely in a positive environment.
