Job Description: The Modoc National Forest Service is seeking a passionate individual to join our team as a Forestry Technician specializing in Timber Sale Preparation. This position presents a unique opportunity to play a crucial role in the management and utilization of forest resources, contributing to sustainable timber harvesting practices within the Modoc National Forest.


  • Conduct field surveys and assessments to gather data on timber stands, including species composition, density, and growth rates.
  • Assist in the planning and layout of timber sales, ensuring compliance with forest management objectives, environmental regulations, and contractual agreements.
  • Utilize GIS and other mapping tools to create maps and diagrams for timber sale areas, road networks, and harvesting operations.
  • Coordinate with timber buyers, contractors, and other stakeholders to facilitate the sale and extraction of timber resources.
  • Monitor timber harvesting activities to ensure adherence to best management practices and minimize environmental impacts.
  • Participate in reforestation efforts, including tree planting and site preparation, to promote the regeneration of harvested areas.


  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry, natural resource management, or a related field preferred.
  • Previous experience in timber sale preparation, forest inventory, or related forestry activities is desirable.
  • Proficiency in GIS software and other technical tools used in forest management and mapping.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Physical stamina and willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and rugged terrain.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
