Overview

DEFINITION:
Under general supervision from management and/or the certificated credentialed school nurse, the Health Assistant II performs specialized health care procedures as needed for designated students in the classroom and other school areas; performs related duties as required. The duties of this classification include provisions of health care to students and performance of specialized health care. This classification requires a Nursing License certification (e.g. LVN or 2 year Registered Nurse). Incumbents are expected to provide first aid and life saving techniques to students without direct nursing supervision.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (May include, but is not limited to the following)
1. Perform specialized health care procedures or provide support to trained staff in performing specialized health care procedures according to specific individualized school health care plans and as approved by the California Department of Education and Health Services: These include, but are not limited to, catheterization and instruction of self-catheterization, tracheotomy care, suctioning, tube feeding, oxygen therapy, ostomy care, nebulizer treatments, oral care, and administration of medication
2. Provide first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other physical health care procedures including, but not limited to: seizures, cardiac problems, menstrual cycle needs, injuries, and safe handling of students with chronic infectious diseases
3. Assist with moving of students to/from the floor, changing tables and wheelchairs
4. Assist in lifting students from wheelchairs and/or adaptive equipment
5. Place and position/reposition students in therapeutic equipment; push wheelchairs and assist with walkers
6. Assist students with clothing, possessions or personal care such as feeding, washing and toileting and changing diapers
7. Sanitize medical equipment and supplies
8. Complete accident reports, when appropriate
9. Dispense prescribed medication according to doctor’s orders, and record medication and treatment given
10. May provide medical supervision to student being transported on school bus, e.g. field trip.
11. Provide services and related duties of the health program, i.e., clerical, ordering health office materials and supplies
12. Assist in maintenance of student health and immunization records, as well as completion of annual immunization reports and other reports
13. Communicate with staff and parents regarding health status of students
14. Support classroom discipline or behavior management programs.
15. Prepare a variety of health-related instructional materials
16. Assist with or operate a variety of medical or educational technology devices or audio-visual equipment
17. Support credentialed school nurse in provision and management of school health care program as needed.
18. May order supplies, forms, instructional and audiovisual materials; may participate in field trips; may supervise students in cafeteria, playground or bus loading.
19. Provide transportation of students, as needed.
20. Practice techniques of infection control and management of blood-borne pathogens.
21. Assist with mandated screenings, such as vision, hearing, color vision and scoliosis screenings.
22. Perform within the bounds of the Nurse Practice Act of the State of California.
23. Follow BCOE and program policy and procedure guidelines.
24. Perform related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE/ABILITY TO:
1. Skill in oral and written communications
2. Skill in use of keyboard and computer and willingness to learn new programs or applications
3. Recognize the first aid and health needs of students and make decisions as to appropriate solutions
4. Respond appropriately in emergency situations
5. Read and comprehend medical terms
6. Remain calm in stressful situations
7. Understand, manage and relate to students who have behavioral problems, learning and physical disabilities
8. Adapt to individual needs of teachers, students and other staff and work with interruptions.
9. Work harmoniously with students, staff, parents and guardians, and community service providers, such as health care providers, the health department, and social service agencies

OTHER:
1. Possession of a valid California driver’s license
2. Verification of current auto insurance
3. Willingness and ability to be trained and receive updated training in the use of special physical health care procedures and behavior intervention techniques (as identified by the California Department of Education)

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
1. Possession of a valid Nursing License certification (i.e; LVN or RN)
2. Possession of a valid standard first aid card and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate;
3. Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates ability to perform the duties as described; experience with students or groups of children or work experience in a medically related field

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to lift 50 pounds; sufficient strength to lift non-ambulatory students with or without the use of aids
• Sufficient mobility to move about the work environment
• Ability to drive to various sites
• Ability to bend and twist, stoop, and kneel
• Ability to lift and move adaptive equipment, and physically restrain and control a student up to 150 pounds with assistance
• Ability to carry 25 pounds
• Ability to stand for extended periods of time
