Position Summary
The Heavy Equipment Operator operates a variety of equipment and trucks utilized in construction, maintenance, and repair activities; perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the installation and maintenance of various wastewater systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Operating trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies
  • Operating trucks and construction or power equipment, such as mechanized broom, backhoe, dump truck, front-end loader, excavators, skid steers, and jetter/hydrovac
  • Operating jackhammers, mowers, brush chippers, and other small equipment and tools
  • Working with and assisting in digging ditches and trenches, hoisting material, tools, equipment, and any related work
  • Performing routine inspection and preventive maintenance on all trucks/trailers /equipment and referring defects or repairs to supervisor; cleaning equipment (e.g., tightening loose bolts/fittings, inspecting all moving parts, lubing zerk fittings, and replacing damaged parts)
  • Monitoring the need for major repairs, including engine tune-up, oil change, filter change, and tire/track replacements
  • Performing all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards
  • Serving as a ground person as required and assigned
  • Providing constant courtesy, discretion, and sound judgment with customers and public
  • Performing other work-related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Two(2) years’ experience involving the use of medium and heavy equipment, preferably related to the underground construction trade. One(1) year plumbing experience may be substituted for equivalent heavy equipment experience
  • Current and valid driver’s license; Class A CDL preferred
  • Ability to safely drive vehicles; Clean driving record – no accidents/violations for past 3 years
  • Working knowledge of the hazards and safety (OSHA) precautions common to heavy equipment operations
  • Working knowledge and skill in operation of the methods, materials, and tools used in underground construction
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to effectively communicate in writing and verbally
  • Ability to observe proper safety precautions
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public
  • Ability to perform manual tasks under varying weather conditions
  • Ability to drive and operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions
  • Ability to work from construction specifications or blueprints
  • Ability to make independent judgments which have considerable impacts on the organization
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, supervisors, and the general public
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts, and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risks of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
