Salary: $24.85 – $30.21 Hourly | $1,988.00 – $2,416.80 Biweekly
DEFINITION
Under general direction, oversees and participates in the general operation of an institutional farm, crop and livestock program; performs gardening, grounds maintenance, building custodial work, and janitorial duties. Incumbents are responsible for assigning, directing and training inmates or work release/job training work crew members to farm, crop and manage livestock.
Examples of Duties
- Plans, assigns and supervises all farming and grounds maintenance work in an institutional farm, including planting, fertilizing, pruning, spraying, mowing, cultivating, and harvesting, and storing of field and garden crops.
- Directs and oversees the operations of inmate work crews engaged in a variety of landscape and grounds maintenance projects on County grounds and facilities. In the preparation of soil, planting, cultivating, irrigating, controlling weeds and pests and the harvesting of all general farm, field, garden and vegetable crops.
- Provides lead direction and training to County work release, job training and inmate crew members in gardening, grounds maintenance and custodial work.
Ability to:
- Train and supervise the work of skilled and unskilled farm laborers in the production of crops and farm and livestock programs.
- Safely operate and maintain a variety of tools, equipment and vehicles as necessary in the performance of dailyactivities.
- Provide clear and concise oral and written instructions or directions.
- Provide leadership of work crews.
Education, Experience & Licenses
Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Education and Experience:
- Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade supplemented by coursework in agriculture or horticulture.
- Three (3) years experience in crop production, farm operations, and/or a maintenance related field. One year of experience supervising or directing a work crew is desired.
- Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
License and Special Requirements:
- Requires a valid California driver’s license.
- May be required to obtain a Qualified Applicator Certificate issued by the State of California Department of Food and Agriculture within six (6) months of appointment.
- May be required to possess a General Pest Applicator License issued by the State of California Structural Pest Control Board.
