Under general supervision, perform a wide variety of janitorial and maintenance duties to provide a clean, orderly, and safe environment; and perform related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Incumbents perform routine janitorial and maintenance duties; troubleshoot, perform minor repairs, and respond to emergency calls for service; work closely with employees, clients, and the public to meet the janitorial needs of the area; and resolve problems to ensure efficient and safe operations.

 Examples of Important and Essential Job Duties (The following is used as a partial description and is not restrictive as to duties required.)

  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, and vacuums hallways, stairs, and workspaces;
  • Empty all trash cans and replace liners, clean receptacles as necessary;
  • Cleans and disinfects bathrooms, cleans countertops, and refills dispensers;
  • Notifies supervisor of any unsafe conditions;
  • Cleans sidewalk and parking areas of debris;
  • Replenishes and maintains an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment;
  • Replace light bulbs and the batteries contained in smoke detectors as needed;
  • Washes walls and windows as needed;
  • Maintains building, performing minor and routine painting, plumbing, electrical wiring, waxes, shampoos carpets, and other related maintenance activities;
  • Replaces air conditioner filters;
  • Notifies supervisor regarding complaints about excessive noise, disorderly conduct, or misuse of property;
  • Notifies supervisor concerning the need for major repairs or additions to lighting, heating, and ventilating equipment;
  • Notifies supervisor of the need of cleaning supplies, materials, and equipment;


Typical Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand, walk and sit for extended periods
  • Ability to walk in uneven terrain and on slippery surfaces
  • Climb ladders and scaffolding
  • Crawl through various areas requiring movement on hands and knees
  • Ability to work around moving objects or vehicles
  • Ability to perform heavy physical labor for sustained periods of time
  • Physical ability to stoop, kneel, and crouch to pick up or move objects
  • Physical ability to lift, push and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance and objects weighing up to 150 pounds with assistance
  • Normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination
  • Corrected hearing and vision to normal range
  • Verbal communications; operate an automobile or truck

Typical Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in a variety of environments and times, both indoors and outdoors
  • Exposures to varying weather conditions
  • Some exposure to controlled and hazardous substances and chemicals
  • Some assignments involve high noise
  • Exposure to fumes and gasses
  • Continuous contact with clients, general public and other staff

Minimum Qualifications

   Knowledge of:

  • General knowledge of methods, materials and practices used in planning and completing building projects.
  • Safe work practices, use and operation of a variety of tools and equipment used in the building trades.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to:

  • Recognize and locate conditions which require maintenance, repair or cleaning.
  • Skillfully and safely use and operate a variety of hand tools, power tools and equipment used in building trades work.
  • Use chemicals related to cleaning and maintenance repairs in a safe manner
  • Work on own initiative without close supervision.
  • Perform arithmetic calculations at a level required for successful job performance.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Maintain and observe all safety precautions and practices.

Training and Experience:

A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D Certificate;
  • At least one (1) year experience in building maintenance, janitorial work and/or general labor;
  • Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver’s License with a good driving record; eligible for Agency automobile insurance coverage per Guidelines for Drivers of Agency Owned Vehicles.
  • Pass a post-offer / pre-employment background check.
  • Pass a post-offer / pre-employment drug test.

***This position will be in Chico and Oroville***
