Under general direction, performs a variety of janitorial and cleaning services to maintain County buildings and facilities; performs cleaning and specialized floor care; cleans and stocks restrooms; maintains condition of cleaning equipment; stores and replenishes supplies.

Distinguishing Characteristic

This is a fully qualified janitorial position; reports to Supervisor, Janitorial Services.

Essential Job Functions

  •  Conducts major cleaning of assigned facilities; cleans and maintains buildings, furnishings, ground and property.
  • Performs a variety of janitorial tasks daily; cleans and disinfects restrooms, shower stalls and mirrors and restocks restrooms;
  • Gathers and empties trash from waste receptacles, offices and general areas.
  • Performs floor maintenance; sweeps and mops floors; strips and waxes floor surfaces; shampoos carpets; removes dirt and debris; pre-spots carpet; mixes cleaning solutions; applies and extracts carpet solution.
  • Cleans and dusts furniture, air vents, door frames, doors, walls, windows and window blinds, mirrors and baseboards.
  • Checks and maintains operational condition of cleaning equipment; operates buffer, vacuum, shampooer and a variety of related equipment.
  • Assists with special events; moves and arranges furniture; opens and secures buildings; locks entrances, exits, doors and other mechanisms in county buildings.
  • Stores and replenishes janitorial supplies; coordinates and completes special cleaning details.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of the practices of janitorial and minor maintenance of public buildings.
  • Knowledge of janitorial procedures and techniques.
  • Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and their interaction.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of janitorial power cleaning and polishing equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe work principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of the County and the Department’s policies and procedures.
  • Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks and demands.
  • Skill in working within deadlines to complete projects and assignments.
  • Skill in identifying and recommending solutions to problems.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with co-workers and other County employees.

Minimum Requirements-Education, Certifications and Licenses

  • One (1) year experience in janitorial or cleaning services.
  • A valid State of California driver’s license is required.
  • Applicants must pass a standard criminal history and background check at time of hire. Candidates assigned to work in County Public Safety/Law Enforcement facilities may also be subject to additional background check requirements, including local, state and national fingerprinting through agencies such as the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed within County facilities.
  • May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.

 Equipment and Tools Utilized

  • Standard equipment includes motorized vehicle, personal computer and standard office equipment.
  • Specialized equipment includes buffer, shampooer and vacuum cleaner
