POSITION SUMMARY:

In addition to providing Emergency Department patient care, the Nursing Supervisor provides advanced clinical and administrative supervision to the facility in support of quality patient care and effective facility operations.  The Nursing Supervisor is responsible for coordinating services for patients, staff, physicians and the general public according to approved hospital policies, procedures and guidelines.  The Nursing Supervisor interacts with other professionals to assure quality care, fiscal responsibility, and optimal allocation of resources and accurate timely transmission of information.  This position acts as the highest-ranking administrative person on site during the evening, night shifts, weekends and holidays and provides initial response to administrative and clinical issues arising during these hours.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
Current licensure in good standing in the state of California
2 years emergency department experience required
ACLS, PALS, CPR certification mandatory

Answers phone calls, assists public, and forwards appropriately if necessary and in a professional and friendly manner.
Conducts an individualized patient assessment, prioritizing the data collection based on the patient’s immediate condition or needs within time frame specified by facilities policy and procedures or protocols.  Notifies Charge Nurse and MD of abnormal findings
Develops individualized plan of care for the patient reflecting collaboration with other members of the healthcare team
Performs appropriate treatments as ordered by physician in an accurate and timely manner
Performs all assigned tasks accurately (e.g., EKGs, blood draws, IV starts, etc.)
Keep work area and beds clean and restocked
Provides individualized patient/family education
Documents patient assessment findings, physical/psychosocial responses to nursing intervention and progress towards problem resolution
Initiates emergency resuscitative measures according to appropriate resuscitation protocols
Provides care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to the patient’s and family’s diversity, preserving their autonomy, dignity, and rights
Adheres to standards of safety and infection control in delivery of patient care
Assumes professional responsibility for assuring patient care is of the highest standards possible.  Communicates questions about appropriateness of medical or nursing care through chain of command, as needed
Follows procedure for medication administration and narcotics control.  Documents medications and nursing care in a timely and accurate manner
Other duties as assigned

Specific Competencies:

Acts as supervising and experienced nurse in the ED performing patient care
Completes supervisor’s shift report and emails to leadership team prior to end of shift
Makes clinical rounds to areas providing patient services
Assesses and assures safety and appropriateness of patient care on all nursing units
Obtains adequate personnel and supplies to provide essential patient care
Provides experienced nursing consultation
Identifies, in collaboration with physicians, patients who need transfer to tertiary care for higher level or specialty care services
Facilitates or assures transfers are completed following all applicable EMTALA policies and procedures including documentation completion
Advises the Nurse Administrator On Call (NAOC) regarding: difficulties with transfers, availability of various resources both personnel and capacity, and unusual or complex patient, personnel, and/or physical plant problems
Promotes a positive public image for MMHD by diffusing crisis involving visitors, patients, or outside agencies
Directly or indirectly supervises all classifications of employees assigned to patient care services on a given shift
Completes or assures completion of incident reports for unexpected circumstances
Answers phone calls, assists public, and forwards appropriately if necessary and in a professional and friendly manner.
Communicates appropriately and clearly to directors, managers, and coworkers
Takes direction from others to include those employees of other departments with which he/she works on a temporary basis in accordance with the chain of command
Maintains all information as confidential as appropriate
Other duties as assigned

Completes annual education requirements if applicable
Maintains regulatory requirements
Wears identification while on duty
Attends annual evaluation and participates actively in this process
Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work in designated time
Attends all meetings as appropriate

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Willingness to work beyond normal working hours and in other positions temporarily when necessary.
Is involved with personnel, visitors and government agencies, etc., when necessary.
Must function independently, have personal integrity, have flexibility and the ability to work effectively with other personnel, clients and support agencies.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Sits, stands, bends, lifts, walks and moves intermittently during working hours.
Able to lift 20 lbs.
