Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

Assist the Director of Nursing (DON) with the overall coordination of the Emergency Department. Coordinates with the DON a working schedule for staff and evaluates their work.  Serve as a clinical resource to nursing personnel.  Organizes the duties of the nurses. Ensures daily tasks are completed by the emergency department staff before leaving each shift.   Coordinates educational opportunities for staff members.  Compiles information for quarterly Quality Board Reports and monthly reports as needed with assistance of DON.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Current licensure in good standing in the state of California.
2 years clinical experience required.
2 years supervisor experience required.
ACLS, PALS, CPR and NRP certification mandatory.

Specific Competencies:

Works with the Director of Nursing and other Hospital Administration on planning, organizing, and directing operations within the Emergency Department and ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
Secures and maintains the physical facilities, equipment and supplies which are required to carry out effective patient care and create an optimum physical environment. Ensures that preventative maintenance is conducted and coordinated on all equipment pertaining to the department.
Carries on continuous analysis, evaluation, and audit of Emergency Services.
Identifies opportunities to improve patient experience. Initiates and actuates improved methods of emergency services and directs their implementation.
Prepares department budgets for personnel, operating expenses, and capital equipment.  Is responsible for the fiscal operation of the department.
Prepares and submits monthly board reports to Director of Nursing. Participates in reporting at Board Meeting during designated department timeslots.
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
Is responsible for the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of performance improvement strategies.
Delegates authority and responsibility to other staff of the department.
Establishes and maintains standards of performance and policies and procedures and ensures that the department operates within those established parameters.
Directs and participates in the human resource management function for the department, coordinating selection, promotion, orientation, discipline, performance evaluations, and other functions of personnel management.
Coordinates the department’s in-service training and education.
Serves as clinical resource to nursing personnel.
Collaborates with the scheduling department, monitors the Emergency Department schedule, and adjusts staffing as needed to staff the floor including call-ins. Covers call-ins and staffing shortages when all other resources have been attempted.
Weekly duties include both administrative and unit floor shifts.

Completes annual education requirements if applicable.
Maintains regulatory requirements.
Wears identification while on duty.
Attends annual evaluation and participates actively in this process.
Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work in designated time.
Attends all meetings as appropriate.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Willingness to work beyond normal working hours and in other positions temporarily when necessary.
Is involved with personnel, visitors and government agencies, etc., when necessary.
Must function independently, have personal integrity, have flexibility and the ability to work effectively with other personnel, clients and support agencies.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Sits, stands, bends, lifts, walks and moves intermittently during working hours.
Able to lift 20 lbs.
