DEPARTMENT OF BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES

PEER SPECIALIST
$3,087.57 – $3,752.96 / Monthly
($17.81– $21.65 / Hourly)

This is a full-time benefitted position

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH PEER SPECIALIST

Definition:
Under direct supervision of the Mental Health Services Act Coordinator or representative, provide a safe and welcoming environment within the community for any individual impacted by mental health challenges, and to do related work as required.

Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
Basic needs and challenges of individuals and families accessing the behavioral health system and/or experiencing mental health challenges. Recovery principles, as well as the complex public and/or private agency services available for individuals and families with behavioral health needs. Community resources and cultures.

Ability to:
Perform a variety of clerical tasks such as operating office machinery. Learn basic use of word processing, internet, and e-mail. Complete necessary documentation to assure participants are linked to necessary resources (i.e. Medi-Cal, CMSP, and job applications). Work flexible hours. Demonstrate culturally sensitive and appropriate interaction. Demonstrate advocacy and teamwork skills. Provide billable case management as instructed by the Agency Supervisors.

Training and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience, which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
One (1) year of experience working in behavioral health services or with a person who has mental health challenges or previous experience with behavioral health services.

Special Requirements:
Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid California Driver’s License.

Typical Physical Requirements:
Sit for extended periods. Frequently stand and walk. Normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Lift and move objects weighing up to 25 lbs. Corrected hearing and vision to normal range. Verbal communication. Use of office equipment, including computer, telephone, calculator, and copiers. Familiarity with the concepts of biofeedback; and drive vehicle for moderate distances in varying weather conditions.
