The PACU registered nurse works in the recovery room (PACU). The PACU RN is a member of the Surgical Services team and works closely with the Surgeon and OR team to provide appropriate preparation and recovery for the surgical patient. The PACU RN demonstrates strong critical thinking skills by assessing and anticipating the specific needs of each individual patient. The PACU RN is able to provide care for more than one patient at various stages of preparation for surgery and recovery simultaneously while prioritizing their care appropriately. The PACU RN educates the patient and family in preparation for the patient’s recovery phase of care according to the type of procedure and expected outcomes. The PACU RN demonstrates competency in understanding the affects of anesthesia and different types of surgical procedures and their impact on the patient. The PACU RN provides a safe environment of care for the patient and family. The PACU RN maintains the standards of the department and Plumas District Hospital in accordance with department and hospital-wide Policies and Procedures.

Assists with surgical procedures in either the scrub or circulator role as assigned. Responsible for direct patient care and safety in the operating room. Responsible for maintaining appropriate supply levels in OR. Assist team members with cleaning, maintenance and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment. Assists with surgical “on call” coverage as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education:  Graduate of accredited School of Nursing; maintains a current license for the State of California; maintains current CPR; current ACLS; current PALS.

Preferred Education:  CNOR preferred

Experience: Minimum of one year experience in the operating room.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  The PACU RN has the ability to utilize the nursing process in the provision of perioperative nursing care including but not limited to administering treatments and medications, interpreting diagnostic tests, formulating a plan of care, collaborating with other health care providers and providing education to patients and/or significant others. The PACU RN will be required to successfully complete competencies for this position. This includes Malignant Hyperthermia, Preoperative Patient skin Antisepsis, Safe Medication Practices, Positioning, and Prevention of Unplanned Hypothermia.
