SALARY INFORMATION

Police Officer: $34.37 – $50.77 Hourly
Police Recruit: $29.34 Hourly

The City of Redding is establishing an eligibility list to fill current and future Police Officer vacancies. We are seeking motivated individuals with a strong commitment toward providing excellent service to the members of the community.  The Mission of the Redding Police Department is to work in partnership with the community to protect life and property, solve neighborhood problems, and enhance the quality of life in our City.
Entry-Level Police Officer: We are currently only considering candidates for the Entry Level Police Officer position who have already completed a 6 month law enforcement academy.

Lateral Police Officer: The Redding Police Department is now offering a $40,000 signing bonus to qualified Lateral Police Officers as well as two weeks of vacation upon successful completion of the probationary period. Compensation is based on years of service and experience as a Peace Officer.  

Police Recruit: is a non-sworn, probationary employee hired by the City who has not completed the basic POST Academy training as required to become a sworn police officer. The City may send recruit officers to an academy or hire individuals currently enrolled in a POST Academy.  The hours and days can vary while in the Academy. At the time the recruit is hired, the cost of the academy and other expenses associated with attending the academy may be paid for by the City. Upon successful completion of the Police Academy training, the Police Recruit will be sworn in as an Entry-Level Police Officer with a wage increase plus PERS retirement, health and welfare benefits, education/POST incentive, shift differential, and uniform allowance.

Qualifications we’re looking for

For Entry Level and Lateral Police Officer applicants:

Knowledge of: Practices and procedures of administration of justice and criminal law, City ordinances and regulations; investigation and crime prevention methods; rules of evidence and laws governing the apprehension, arrest, custody, and prosecution of law violators; and effective public relations. Understand the concept and Department’s direction in utilizing community oriented policing and problem solving.

Ability toInteract effectively with the public and employees. Read, understand, and carry out departmental policies, rules, instructions, laws and regulations; analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective, and reasonable course of action; write clear and accurate reports; understand and follow directions; utilize the safe use and care of automobiles, motorcycles, and firearms; make detailed observations, recall names, personal descriptions, and details of incidents; meet standards of adequate physical stature, endurance, and agility.

Education & Experience: Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities are qualifying; typical education includes a high school diploma or equivalent.

Entry-Level Police Officer: Less than one year of “street” experience and successful completion of an accredited POST basic academy.

Lateral Police Officer: Currently working with another agency OR meet California POST standards for a Police Officer. Completion of probation. One year of street patrol experience.

For Police Recruit applicants:

Knowledge of: The knowledge and skills required to complete the required course work beyond the high school diploma and to successfully perform the job requirements.

Ability toInteract effectively with the public and employees. Education & Experience:

Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying; typical education includes a High School diploma, or equivalent.

Police Recruits: must have 30 units upon completion of the P.O.S.T. Academy.

Special Requirements:

  • Minimum age of 21 years at time of appointment as a peace officer per government code section 1031.4
  • No felony convictions.
  • Shall be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.
  • Possession of the appropriate California driver’s license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment.

Entry-Level Police Officer: Applicants must attach a copy of a California POST Academy certificate. POST Academy Certificates over three years old require proof of completion of a POST Academy update course.

Lateral Police Officer:  Applicants must attach a copy of a Basic POST certification.
Police Recruit: Applicants must have completed and attach the “Post Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB)” with a “T-Score” score of 45 or higher (certificates over two years old will not be accepted) to their application and possess a minimum of 30 college semester units upon successful completion of the academy, OR, be currently enrolled in a POST academy in good standing, with a “T-Score” score of 45 or higher, and possess 30 college semester units upon successful completion of the academy.  
Per P.O.S.T regulation:
  • The T-Score letter must be issued on Agency Letterhead and must include the score section breakdown (written, reading and total T-Score).
  • You cannot re-take the PELLETB in less than 30 days.
  • The written test for Correctional Officer or Probation Officer are not equivalent to the PELLETB and are therefore not eligible for consideration from test exemption.

A medical examination must be completed satisfactorily after an offer of employment and before the start date to ensure essential elements of the position can be performed; candidates must successfully complete a psychological evaluation, comprehensive personal background investigation, polygraph examination, and a substance use test.
Meeting the announced requirements does not guarantee selection into the examination process.  Applications will be reviewed by subject matter experts and those applicants found best qualified may be tested.
Veterans Credit: Veterans who have received an honorable discharge from the military service and receive a passing score on the examination will have two points added to their final examination score. To obtain this credit, veterans must provide a copy of the DD214, indicating honorable discharge with each employment application before the closing date.

Test Requirement: The testing phase will include, an oral board panel, Chief’s Interview, a comprehensive background investigation, psychological, medical, and polygraph examination.
