Description:

Sergeant description imageUnder the direction of a Lieutenant or Captain, supervises and participates in field patrol operations and activities of an assigned shift, and/or supervises and participates in the daily operations of an assigned shift in the jail facility, and/or supervises and participates in the daily operations of the civil, patrol and other assigned operations of the department.  Prepares and maintains required records and reports. Incumbents of this position are sworn officers and are required to maintain appropriate POST certificate.

SALARY
Sergeant :(A-E Steps)
$38.76 – $47.12 Hourly / $3,100.80 – $3,769.60 Biweekly

Examples of Duties

Supervises subordinate officers through the chain of command within assigned area of responsibility; monitors and evaluates performance of personnel to ensure proper and effective attainment of department goals. | Assists in conducting effective training of division personnel. | Ensures the provision and maintenance of vehicles and equipment for subordinate personnel. | Prepares and presents unit briefings. | Responds to incidents, providing leadership, coordination and/or backup as needed. | Reviews reports, warrants and other documents prepared by subordinate officers for accuracy and completeness; prepares and maintains required records, reports, case documentation, etc. | Performs normal patrol, jail and/or civil process duties as scheduled, which may include  enforcing local and state laws, enforcing boating laws and regulations, issuing citations, making arrests, administering first aid, transporting prisoners, serving civil papers, assisting with initial investigations, gathering evidence, questioning witnesses and suspects, responding to traffic incidents, responding to alarms, processing prisoners, maintaining discipline in jail, etc.; assists subordinate officers with assigned duties as needed. | Receives and responds to public inquiries, complaints and requests for assistance. Oversees special projects or programs as assigned. Maintains required level of proficiency in the use of firearms. | Supervises the storage and security of evidence, inmates’ personal property, etc. | Provides court testimony as necessary. | Supervises and assists with dispatch duties as necessary on assigned shift. | Performs other duties as may be assigned.

Education, Experience & Licenses

Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: 

  • Equivalent to the completion of twelfth (12th) grade.  Coursework in police science, administration of justice or a related field is desirable.
  • Four (4) years of law enforcement experience including one (1) year at the level of Detective-Investigator, Deputy Sheriff, or Correctional Sergeant.  Supervisory experience is desirable.

Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

LICENSE & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a Peace Officers’ Standards and Training (POST) intermediate law enforcement certificate.
  • Must possess a valid Red Cross first aid certificate.
  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment. Maintain P.O.S.T. physical standards, including mobility and physical strength and stamina to respond to emergency situations and apprehend suspects. Vision to maintain firearms qualification and to read printed materials and a computer screen. Hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone or radio.  Requires frequent walking on uneven terrain, climbing and descending structures to access crime scene and to identify problems or hazards.  Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter and retrieve data using a keyboard or calculator and to operate police services equipment. Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach and climb to perform work and inspect work sites. Must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects, more than 100 pounds occasionally and frequently 50 pounds or more, as necessary to perform job functions.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Tasks may require occasional exposure to violent and stressful situations, adverse environmental conditions, extreme heat/cold, strong odors and/or smoke, strong and/or toxic chemicals, blood borne pathogens, dust and pollen.
