Job Title: Substitute Custodian

Pay Range: $17.77 (Part Time)

Job Description: We are seeking a Substitute Custodian to join our team responsible for maintaining buildings or a portion of a building, and the adjacent immediate grounds area, ensuring they are kept in a clean, safe, and sanitary condition. The Substitute Custodian will also be responsible for setting up school facilities for students’ extracurricular activities and/or the public’s use of school facilities. This role plays a crucial part in providing a conducive environment for learning and community engagement.


  1. Cleaning and Maintenance:
    • Perform routine cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and dusting in designated areas of the building.
    • Clean and sanitize restrooms, replenishing supplies as needed.
    • Empty trash receptacles and ensure proper disposal of waste.
    • Clean windows, doors, and other glass surfaces.
    • Maintain cleanliness in common areas such as hallways, stairwells, and entryways.
    • Perform minor maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, repairing fixtures, and painting as needed.
    • Report any maintenance issues or safety hazards to the appropriate personnel.
  2. Set up and Breakdown of Facilities:
    • Prepare rooms and facilities for school events, meetings, and activities.
    • Arrange furniture, equipment, and other necessary items according to the requirements of each event.
    • Ensure facilities are set up in a timely manner and according to established guidelines.
    • Assist in the breakdown and cleanup of facilities after events, ensuring they are returned to their original condition.
  3. Safety and Security:
    • Follow safety procedures and protocols to maintain a safe working environment.
    • Monitor and report any security concerns or unauthorized individuals on school premises.
    • Ensure that all doors, windows, and gates are properly secured when not in use.
    • Assist in emergency situations such as fire drills or evacuations as directed.
  4. Collaboration and Communication:
    • Coordinate with other custodial staff to ensure efficient use of resources and effective completion of tasks.
    • Communicate effectively with school staff, administrators, and external stakeholders regarding facility needs and scheduling.
    • Provide friendly and courteous assistance to students, staff, and visitors when needed.


  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous experience in custodial work or related field preferred.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness and safety.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, lifting, and carrying heavy objects.
  • Good communication skills and ability to interact professionally with diverse individuals.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, or irregular hours as needed.
