Description

The City of Redding Public Works Department is currently accepting applications for Technical Interns. This is a training class intended to provide students with temporary employment whereby the students may receive on-the-job instruction and perform work that will provide practical experience in their field of study.  Technical Interns may be asked to work in various Divisions within Public Works.
Ideal candidates are currently enrolled in an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering or Construction Management.

We are looking for someone to

  • Assists professional technical employees in the performance of their duties or performs these duties under close supervision.
  • Makes photocopies and blueprints.
  • Receives instructions from staff members and applies knowledge to work situations.
  • Learns departmental policies, procedures and methods of operation.
  • Assists in collecting and analyzing data, preparing charts and reports.
  • Participates in studies and prepares reports under the supervision of professional staff.
  • Operates a variety of equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications we’re looking for

Knowledge of:
  • Basic principles and concepts of the academic field related to the department to which the employee is assigned
  • Basic mathematical principles; grammar and techniques for the preparation and distribution of information
  • Basic principles and practices of organization and public administration;
  • Research techniques
  • Methods of report presentation
  • Report writing; depending upon assignment
  • Basic principles of public administration
Ability to:
  • Interact effectively with the public and employees.
  • Reason logically, draw sound conclusions and make recommendations;
  • learn to assist in performing assigned technical functions;
  • gather and analyze data;
  • understand oral and written instructions;
  • compose clear and concise reports, both orally and in writing;
  • analyze a variety of technical problems and make sound recommendations.
Education & Experience:
  • Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying;
  • Typical education would include being currently enrolled in a program leading to a degree from an accredited college, university, or equivalent.
  • Typical experience would include some prior relevant experience
Special Requirements:
  • Possession of the appropriate California driver’s license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment.

Examination Process: An oral board, performance test and/or written examination will be administered.  This recruitment is open until filled and may close at any time with minimal or no notice. Applications not submitted by the close of the recruitment may not be considered.
This class is not intended to be used for permanent employment and no full-time permanent appointments will be made in this class.

Final appointment is contingent upon:

  • Positive past employment references
  • Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check (applicants 18 and older)
  • Passing of a pre-employment medical exam and drug and alcohol screening test

Veteran’s Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating “Honorable Discharge” from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.
