JOB SUMMARY
The Smart Workforce Center, a private, non-profit, public benefit corporation in Shasta, Trinity, Siskiyou and Del Norte Counties seeks a full time Young Adult Career Advisor to join our dynamic team. The Career Advisor facilitates the connection between businesses and qualified young-adult job seekers. As a Career Advisor for young adults, you will participate in:
- Assisting young adult job seekers to find self-sufficient employment
- Evaluating and certifying the eligibility of program participants for job training and education programs
- Creating employment plans and coordinating basic job preparation activities
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive client files and tracking systems
- Prepare clear and concise case notes
- Display excellent organizational skills
- Understanding the needs of employers to effectively assist businesses with their hiring needs
- Matching needs of business community with qualified job seekers
A bachelor’s degree in HR, Business, Psychology or Social Services with a background in hiring practices, career counseling or job search techniques is ideal, but if you’ve been a mentor, academic tutor or worked with young adults in a different way, we would love to hear from you. We are looking for someone with strong interpersonal skills that can develop connections with the young adults seeking employment in our community. Strong skills in Microsoft Office programs including Word, Access, Outlook and Excel are highly desirable. And if you have experience teaching these programs, that’s even better!
The position pays between $16.14 and $27.28 per hour and some travel is required on an infrequent basis. The schedule is Monday-Friday 8am-5pm. We are closed for lunch daily from noon- 1pm. We offer three weeks of paid vacation each year, a company paid retirement program, and a paid week off between Christmas and New Year’s. Definition
Working under the supervision of the Supervisor or Manager, the Career Advisor develops the connection between businesses and qualified job seekers; puts job seekers to work; organizes client flow through the company and partner agencies; develops and enhances business and community relationships; tracks and case manages, provides individual and training services to enhance the success of job seekers and to meet the hiring needs of the employer community.
Duties and Responsibilities
Duties of the position may include: understanding the needs of employers to effectively assist businesses with their hiring needs; acting as liaison between businesses, job seekers, and partner agencies; developing, negotiating and monitoring worksite training agreements and work experience contracts; assisting worksites with trainee attainment of Job Specific Skills competencies; developing ongoing relationships with businesses while marketing programs and services; coordinating Rapid Response to Shasta County businesses; participating in job development and job placement activities; entering job order and worksite information into management information system and tracking and recording customer progress; assessing of job seeker and employer needs; evaluating and certifying eligibility of adults and youth for job training and education programs creating employment plans and coordinating basic, remedial and job preparation activities; making effective referrals to community, employment, training and support services/programs; leading workshops and presenting to groups; representing the company at meetings and reporting on progress; scheduling and coordinating events; maintaining excellent customer service; performing other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: hiring practices; government program regulations; employment and labor law; marketing and sales; labor market information; labor laws and personnel practices; contract writing; effective job search techniques; eligibility, assessment and career exploration techniques and tools; software programs including Microsoft Word, Access, Outlook and Excel; community agencies and other local resources.
Ability to: exercise good judgment; interact with the public and business community tactfully and courteously; work independently to organize, schedule and manage assignments; meet deadlines; collect and analyze data for reporting purposes; prepare clear and concise case notes and have good organization skills; develop and maintain professional relationships; operate a computer to track and report information; use Internet and e-mail; learn and follow established policies and procedures; establish rapport with job seekers, incumbent workers and employers to analyze situations and implement effective action plans; provide quality customer service, maintain confidentiality; demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Travel may be required in this position. If the incumbent drives a personal vehicle while performing required duties, automobile insurance with approved levels of bodily injury and property damage must be maintained. The assigned supervisor or human resource administrator will advise the incumbent of the required levels based on driving frequency. The Smart Business Resource Center participates in the California DMV Employer Pull Notice (EPN) program. Employee participation in the EPN program is required.
Qualifications
High school diploma or AA/AS degree and ability to attain workforce development and staffing industry certification within 9 months of hire is required as a condition of employment.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to two years of college in human resources, psychology, business administration, social services or closely related experience preferred; Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

In order to successfully perform the various duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, frequently required to sit, occasionally required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms, and occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
